Volunteers are the backbone of the American Red Cross. The Union County Chapter has many volunteer positions to fit your schedule and talents. Volunteer opportunities include nurses, instructors, disaster workers, shelter workers, blood drive workers, military assistance and office assistance. Many activities can be done at home. We will also provide training. We need you so please get involved!

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
BLOOD SERVICES
- Welcome donors and serve refreshments at bloodmobiles
- Pick up and deliver canteen and supplies for bloodmobiles
- Create bimonthly blood schedule mailing and assist with quarterly newsletter mailing
HEALTH & SAFETY SERVICES
- Train to become an Instructor in CPR/AED/First Aid/Swimming/Babysitting (must be 17 or older)
- Do presentations to school, church, and civic groups
- Data entry for classes
DISASTER SERVICES
- Become a Disaster Action Team member (Assist families affected by house fires and other disasters, assist with mass care (feeding and sheltering)
- Logistics (Helping to organize the necessary items to be used in disaster relief)
- Reading and closing case files
- Updating shelter, vendor (restaurant, hotel, & retail) agreements
ARMED FORCES EMERGENCY SERVICES
- Assist with emergency communication between members of the armed forces and their families
- Do presentations with local military groups (ROTC, National Guard, etc.)
- Represent the American Red Cross at funerals for members of the armed forces and veterans
COMMUNITY EDUCATION
- Do presentations to groups in the community about preventing, preparing for and coping with emergencies
- Represent the American Red Cross at health, agency and safety fairs
- Distribute educational material as opportunities present themselves
PROGRAM SUPPORT
- Assist staff by answering the telephone and directing calls
- Help with special projects (fund raising and special event planing)
- Data entry to keep records up to date
- Making phone calls to schedule appointments or do follow-up surveys
- General office assistance (A regular weekly time is preferred for general program support - i.e. 90 minutes every Monday)
- Solicit items from local businesses, organizations, churches, etc. such as:
- Canteen items
- individually wrapped cookies and cheese or peanut butter crackers
- napkins
- canned soft drinks and individual bottles of sports drinks or juice
(these are used for emergency personnel & blood drives)
- Health & Safety
- dark colored size medium T-shirts
- newborn diapers
- Comfort Kit items
- shampoo
- washcloths
- packs of tissues
- toothpaste, toothbrush, etc.
The chapter will maintain a record of volunteer hours and provide letters of recommendation for students needing information for community service, college applications and scholarships.
