Last
year, 58 Union and Anson County families received emergency assistance
from our Emergency Disaster Response program. These were mostly
families experiencing devastating house fires.
Each family received disaster relief services such as immediate hotel placement, food, clothing, medicine and
first month's rent on a new residence. Our volunter Disaster Action Teams respond to emergencies whenever called -- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Red Cross volunteers also support local first responders and other emergency service providers with canteen services. Last year, the local chapter provided 15 mass feedings serving 660 people.

In Case of Major Community Emergency, Remember:
* Remain Calm * Follow the advice of local officials by tuning in to your local TV or radio stations. You may be asked to seek shelter at your home or office, or evacuate to a community shelter designated by local authorities. (See below for details). * If the disaster occurs near you, check for injuries and provide first aid. Get help for anyone seriously injured. * If the disaster occurs near your home, check for damage using a flashlight. Do not light matches, candles or turn on or off electrical switches. Check for fire hazzards like exposed wires, and other household hazards. If you can smell a strong odor of gas or suspect a leak, get everyone outside quickly and leave the door open behind you. Call the gas company from another location. * Confine or secure your pets. * Call family contact - do not use the telephone again unless it is a life-threatening emergency. * Check on your neighbors, especially those living alone, elderly, or disabled.

Red Cross volunteers and paid staff are available 24 hours a day to provide immediate relief to victims of disasters. The Red Cross responds to everything from single-family house fires to community-wide disasters such as hurricanes, floods and tornadoes. Services include providing emergency shelter, food, and clothing to disaster victims in our community.
All disaster assistance is free, made possible by generous contributions of time and money from the citizens of Union County.
The Union County Chapter of the Red Cross also offers free presentations to families, children, schools, churches and civic groups about how to be prepared and stay safe if a disaster strikes. In addition, the Chapter provides training for community volunteers who are available to help with local and national disaster relief efforts.
